Project Description

Creative Industries: Historical, artistic, economic and legal principles

Summer School

Yasnaya Polyana, 15 – 21 July, 2007

Context

The modern world is rapidly entering the post-industrial era, switching from raw-material economy to creative industries development. The response of the academic professionals shall be twofold. Firstly, new methodologies, techniques and practices shall be elaborated to take on the challenges of the new economic circumstances. Secondly, new generation of specialists shall be trained – professionals capable to think and act in cross-disciplinary inter-sectoral cognitive and operating fields.

The serious deficiency impeding Russian academic milieu to become a key player in the creative industries development is the lack of practically oriented cross-departmental approaches, products and tools allowing to meet the demands of novel social and economic trends.

Concept

The programme is intended to present and discuss the creative industries phenomenon as a fusion of the contemporary humanitarian knowledge with economic and social practices. The participants will be introduced into the key international research findings in the field and will be encouraged to analyse the potential of creative economy in Russia.

The programme is cross-disciplinary and will welcome senior students, postgraduates and professors specialising in the arts, cultural anthropology, economics, journalism, law, philosophy, political sciences and sociology.

The project is aimed at:

  • embedding the concept of creative industries in Russian academic milieu;
  • showcasing the academic potential of cross-disciplinary research in the field of creative industries;
  • contributing to integration of Russian academic programmes into the practically-oriented international methodological context;
  • creating scientific, legal and practical tools for promoting creative industries development in Russia.

The main targets of the project are:

  • developing the students’ understanding of historical, economic and legal patterns of creative industries evolution;
  • advocating the in-depth study of creative industries as an asset for updating various academic fields and enhancing their practical output;
  • offering guidelines for elective and subsequently core units in creative industries for university humanitarian departments;
  • encouraging students to explore the creative industries phenomenon in their theses.
